This blog is dedicated to my dearest Krishna...mostly poetry, sometimes through the words of a Gopi, and sometimes, just my own musings...

Far away

Krishna!

How far away is the heart

That strives to think of You!

How despondent the mind

That struggles to write for You.

As this slave sits in self-wallowing,

You appear like a strike of lightning!

The rains be my many struggles

As long as at Your feet i find shade to snuggle!

An Ode to Shrinathji

 The skies engaged in a downpour copious,

Assuming the colour of my dark-hued Lord glorious!

And as tears of joy remained checked in my conscience,

The elements united to remind me of His presence!

A gentle draft so cool and soothing,

Like the call of His flute endearing;

The fragrance of mud wafting in the air,

Chiding me of He who the world in His wide mouth bared!

Drenched as I was twice over:

Once from the rains and at His feet i sought cover;

From a sly corner, His gaze had my heart aflutter!

And lo, His love enthralled me in a merciful shower!

Eight years ago, was when i made my first wish;

The magical eight year old has ruled my heart ever since!

Teasing, chiding, making me dance to His whims;

The Lord who held up the hill, at last granted me a glimpse!

Like a beggar beseeching alms,

There stood this slave with open palms!

Once passed over, once turned away:

I had been in anticipation of He to whose tunes the worlds sway!

Clad as He was in a gracious green;

In moments Srinathji had my heart preened!

Adorned He was with the peacock's plumage;

And to my ailing heart He granted anchorage!

He who is notorious for butter theft:

Oh! How i was tempted to follow His footsteps!

Even of tears these poor eyes are bereft;

A glance, a glimpse; a radiant blur is all that's left!

Near and Far

 A trickle of hope in a land destitute,

A beam of light in a path rather acute;

A ray of hope piercing through the shut window:

Such is the dazzling sight You endow!

Laden with the choicest peacock feathers,

Swaying  with the wind hither and thither;

A surreal smile and those eyes that astound:

Flowing as ever with mercy abound!

The distances have accumulated like a wall,

And from afar longingly my gaze falls:

Like a hazy picture i desperately wish to recall,

Here i am longing for Your gracious call!

Pride and ignorance have looted my mind,

And yet Your footprints all over i find!

With hope, everytime i turn behind,

Longing for a glimpse of my Lord divine!

Like a singer parched, a child lost:

(Reliving the memories of the past)

Surrendered, of further words i am wrought!

As always, in You every solution i have sought!

The Flower of my Dreams

He who holds the universe by its seams,
Descended at dawn in my dreams!
Majestic and radiant, the Perpetuator stood mighty and tall,
With the radiance of a million suns, He did enthrall!

Like a glimmer of a wave in a dark ocean,
Sporting a serene smile that my spirit emboldened!
The slayer of demons, the upholder of civilisations:
Slayed my inhibitions, and upended every ounce of imagination!

Akin to a beautiful black mountain ,
The handsome chest of He who has Lakshmi smitten!
Over His handsome torso, like a tornado pulled in,
Was Adorned a lone garland with little flowers pink.

Overflowing with mercy, His eyes my meagre heart enamoured,
In my shaking hands were thrusted, His very flowers!
Even in silence, a million messages seemed to be spoken,
Gushing with gratitude, as all distances seemed to be broken!

Thenthiruperai-1

Bearing a white conch, whirled and pristine,
Adorning the other hand is the auspicious wheel;
Enchanting in all His splendour, with eyes like the lotus flower,
Mounting the divine bird, He rides my heart, unencumbered!
O mothers! In what words can I possibly surmise?
The beauty I wish you witness with your own eyes!
In that land where the Vedic chants are relentless,
And the music of celebrations endless:
Therein He sits, the epitome of bliss blemishless;
Enjoying the sounds of the kids’ games that never cease!
To that Thiruperai, this lost girl shall reach!

A liberal translation of Parangusa Nayaki’s (Nammazhwar’s) pining for the Lord of Thenthiruperai! Even as her mother and other ladies try to convince her otherwise, she explains that she is already lost to Him.(From Tiruvaymozhi 7.3.1)

The Dark Hue of the Flowers

O dark-hued monsoon flowers!
Where is He, endowed with the blue of the dark ocean’s waters,
By whom you are sent;
He who created you as warheads aimed for my personal torment?
To whom else shall I further lament ?
Running behind the  One adorned with the tulsi garland,
O! What can I do; even my hapless heart is in His command ?

Andal sees the lilies blooming in the monsoon, and even their colour reminds Her of  Her dark coloured lover. And so she begins lamenting her helplessness in this maddening love.

A liberal translation from Nachiyar thirumozhi 10.1

Sand Castles

The Majestic Lion reclining in the ocean endless,
Who saved from the crocodile’s clutches the elephant maddened and hapless;
With your sideways glances, you trouble our lovelorn hearts,
We, who yearning for you , are already torn apart!
As we work tirelessly, our bangles jingle;
Shaping this labour of love, our sand castle!
O Lord reclining in the ocean with waves of milk,
Do not destroy the castles we so deliberately built!

Another day, another liberal translation from Andal’s Nachiyar Thirumozhi (2.3).
Kothai and her fellow gopis were building sand castles to offer to worship to the God of love, which Krishna keeps on destroying and goes about effortlessly interfering with their worship.
She then chides Him for doing so, again and again, and tiring them out.
It’s beautiful that this is very similar to the Gopis’ plight in Vrindavan, and on reading about Sant Sakhu Bai, a similar tale repeats there.

Of Bumbling bees and Lotus Flowers

Surrounded by fragrant flowers and abundant gardens,
Stands tall and majestic the Lord of the mountain!
Oh bees bumbling around the blossoming  flower, pleasuring one another;
Indeed, show me a path to thus surrender!
Dark complexioned like the clouds struck by lightning and thunder,
And His eyes a reddish hue like you O! Lotus flower:
 Show me how to surrender unto my Lover!

-A liberal translation from Andal’s Nachiyar Tirumozhi, in which She describes her pining and unrequited love for Kallazhagar (literally, the Beautiful One) of Thirumaliruncholai.

Reaching out

O Parthasarathy!!

Adorned as You are in your shining pearls,
Beauty personified is my Krishna blue-hued!
Charming is Your magnificent stride:
Dazed i am by Your doting smile! ❤️

Lucky are those whose eyes fall upon
This wonderful Lord whom this Universe depends on!
Blessed are those who beget a mere glance
From You who weaves even the whims of chance!

What the Heart Wants.

Oh lord!
Caught in utter duress this heart of mine
Just yearned for one sight of Yours divine:
And when You bestowed on this slave your grace benign;
What more do I need, o lord of mine?

However my sorrow may be profound,
In You it has solace found!
How indebted I am for Your presence!
How grateful to perceive Your eyes so intense!

O Protector of Your devotees!
O KrishnaWhen Your lips smile with such serenity:
What better medicine is there in all eternity!
 When Your loving glance thus bores into my heart:
O parthasarathy: all my fears with haste depart!

Calling Out

Far away my heart cries
For the lover in whom the worlds reside!
Oh dear Lord! This sorrow my world overrides,
Would You please call me to your side?

For Your smile so captivating
And Your eyes enchanting!
For Your big arms so reassuring:
Here, my heart lies yearning!

Oh what a fool this girl is
So near yet so far from eternal bliss!
Fallen in a sea of intractable mistakes
I have my heart forsake!

Finding myself in utter free fall,
This slave surrenders to her Lord:
Will not your merciful eyes befall
A hapless who has Your help sought?

The flowers that adorned Your shoulders mighty:
The unerring messengers of Your fragrance earthy;
This slave now holds in her hands blessed,
Even as my heart leaps in joy at Your behest!

The world may call them unworthy
For they now appear variably withered!
But oh! They were on my sweet Sarathy smothered:
Does the damned world know that few are as fortunate and worthy?

The roses that are now half-dead,
Hide the scent of my Lord so unmistakable!
In the yellow flowers that are now black instead,
i feel the force of Your perspiration so recognizable!

In the white flowers that You once adorned with grace:
Wearing them, i rejoice in the warmth of Your embrace!
And o Lord! By the leaves of tulasi betwixt strung,
i taste the dust of Your Holy Feet in my tongue!!

There aren't words to describe Your love,
Or Dearest Krishna! The benovelant boons You bestow!
O Merciful Lord who enchants with Your smile so serene:
Let me please be a lotus for Your beautiful Feet!!

How cursed must this idiot be
That i must Your disappointed form see?
What did i do wrong, my Lord?
That, with Your indifference, i be so scorched?

Like two bright almonds Your beautiful eyes,
Their radiance that charms and enchants the mind:
How come today even a glance they deny?
Than be scorched by Their anger, i'd rather i die!!

My Lord! Please do forgive a slave,
Who does earnestly for Your smile crave!!
O Dearest Lover! Bestow upon me Your mercy,
And please accept me at Your feet!!

My Lord!
Your lotus eyes and their depth endless,
Fill a poor girls imagination with desires relentless!
O my Krishna of charm boundless,
Bind me to You by Your mercy causeless!!

Lost in the luxury of Your kind love,
Have i forgotten the boons You have bestowed?
O my Love! Lord of my dreams!
Keep me forever at Your Lotus Feet!

Wednesday, October 31, 2012

i am running directionless
Apparently away from my Lord, and yet careless!
This slave is unable to halt her fleeing O Lord blemishless-
Save me, i be drowned in an unfortunate sea lest!

Caught in a web of wants and desires,
Distress and despair, procrastination and lies-
There is no account now of how times flies!
There are no definitions of weakening ties!

When again will You permit this girl
To be lost in the magic of Your beautiful lotus Eyes?
When again will You hold me so close
That my heart suffers from an emotional overdose?

i may be hopeless and worthless
But without You, this existence is meaningless!
Surrendered unto Your Lotus feet, i beseech forgiveness;
Dearest Narasimha! Abandon Your fury, and save me from this distress!

Mukti!

People may have different views on freedom.
For this slave, real mukti (freedom) is that i am never ever "freed" from Your service!
Real "mukti" is in unalloyed devotion and hurdle-free service!
Real "mukti" is always being caught in the web of Your love!
Here's begging You to grant that boon!

Be My Guide

O Beloved Lord!
Usually, for but a glance this slave begs away,
Adorning You, Damodara in dreams so far, far away!
Today, o dearest, i am afraid i ask for more:
For if the end be defeat, it'd be rather sore!

In this battlefield called Life
Except for You, alone myself i find!
Uplift me, guide me, stir me
Make me work for victory!

Surrendered unto Your feet as always:
i beg You to cast Your merciful gaze.
You show the light at the tunnel's end
i beg You now to illuminate the path and its numerous bends!

Misgivings

Dear Lord:
So many misgivings this heart possesses,
So many shameful attempts at staying away;
So many trajectories the unfaithful mind traverses-
But how long away from its Lord will it stay?

You are the Giver who bestows
The Lord who protects
The Ruler unto whom this slave is surrendered:
Please, oh please! Don't let my mind wander asunder!!

Who but You to anchor, the
Heart sailing in uncertain waters?
Who else is there whose support i can seek?
Save me from myself-this, of You, i beseech!!

Let there not be a time when am not lost in Your lovely eyes,
May Your smile send me into a dizzy high!
Let this slave always be Yours:
 Lost in thougths of the eternal charmer!!

Dear Dreams

Of silent evenings spent together,
Of beautiful nights in the company of my Lover;
Of days spent staring into Your Lotus Eyes,
i dream, at times with closed, and at times with open eyes!

Krishna, of Your hug's warmth and comfort,
Of the electricity, dearest Hari, that Your touch would elicit,
O Parthasarathy! Of the loving kisses You would imprint,
i dream, at times with closed, and at times with open eyes!

Of serving You sumptous food,
And fanning Your beautiful features as eat You would;
And the nectar of Your lips to partake in Your remains if i could:
Endlessly, infinitely; dream this slave would!!

i dream, Parthasarathy, of our hands intertwined,
But somewhere, in between, myself lost i find;
Dearest Lord, i dream of serving Your beautiful Lotus Feet
But, lost, i suffer miserably in between.

i have none but You
So, dearest Lover, save me anew.
Kill me if You wish with Your dazzling smile:
Own me in entirety with Your unparalleled might!

Inseperation

Oh dear Parthasarathy!!
My world may turn upside down,
My cheerfulness may find worry and frown,
The tide of problems may seem to drown-
All i beg are that Your beautiful feet be my crown!

Pressures multi-directional may tear my heart apart-
O Curly Haired Lover!! that You blissfully rule it is all i ask.
From You, even if my brain fleets away:
Dear Lord- mercifully rein me in and make me stay.

If ever this heart be flickery and fragile:
Always, dearest robber, may it to You reconcile.
Even if You find this slave unworthy:
O Dearest of Your devotees, shower upon me Your causeless mercy.

Like moths to fire, bees to nectar;
Let me always run to You, O Dearest guiding star!
From You, dear Lord Parthasarathy, this slave may never be seperated!
In Your kind embrace, always keep me protected!!
